Seeing your designs on a t-shirt is one thing, but to see it come to life on the epidermis of a human being is quite another. I am starting a new line of tees, I will have them to you shortly to finish that leg off...

MLB logo by Jerry Dior

More than two weeks ago The Wall Street Journal reported on Jerry Dior, the uncredited designer of the Major League Baseball logo that has been the league's identifier since the late 1960s and has spawned endless iterations for other professional sports. Dior isn't looking for fame or fortune, just acknowledgment from the league who, despite having enough supporting stories from Dior's peers, is still looking for some sort of magical evidence that Dior did the logo. Paul Lukas of Uniwatch, recently interviewed Dior about the logo and there is some great stuff in there: "I just did it, y'know? It was fast. I think I spent just an afternoon on it."

NEWBARIC in October

I have to say, October has been a great month, so far. It could cool off a bit, but other than that things are great.

The surf has been unbelievable. Great conditions, decent crowd control and more waves than I know what to do with. After a long summer break from surfing, my favorite time of year is back, FALL. Things cool down a bit and people are vacating the beaches.

Not to mention I have the prefect quiver right now to compliment any wave condition. My 6'4" Automatic is the all-around wave slayer, my 6'6" EP (retro egg) is for any wave up and down the coast and for the small days I take out the 9'3" single fin shaped by Ryan Engle of Infinity Surfboards.

The Automatic is magic. I just press the GO button and it does all the work.

The EP takes your surfing and adds a bit of Joel in the mix. So soul.

The 9'3" banana-yellow board is a conundrum. You are out there with the log mentality, but the thing packs more performance, pound for pound than most shortboards I have ridden. A one-two punch of performance and nose-perches. Who could ask for more?

Shifting gears...

At this time in October is when Chicago fans start to accept that the Cubs will always be terrible and that "next year" doesn't matter right now, because the Bears are in full effect. The Bears are, well, the Bears. I live by every play and cant wait to see the blue and orange take the field, win or lose. There is something about watching a game LIVE in 10 degree windchill that words cannot describe. And Orton, who knew?

All in all, this has been the best month and today has been the best day of the year. I hope you enjoyed yours. Until next time, stay classy humans and humanettes.

What all of this means, in short, is that the aftermath of Peak Oil will extend far beyond how much you will pay for gas. To illustrate: in a July 2006 special report published by the Chicago Tribune, Pullitzer Prize winning journalist Paul Salopek described the consequences of Peak Oil as follows:
. . . the consequences would be unimaginable. Permanent fuel shortages would tip the world into a generations-long economic depression. Millions would lose their jobs as industry implodes. Farm tractors would be idled for lack of fuel, triggering massive famines. Energy wars would flare. And carless suburbanites would trudge to their nearest big box stores, not to buy Chinese made clothing transported cheaply across the globe, but to scavenge glass and copper wire from abandoned buildings. Journalist Jonathan Gatehouse summarized the conclusions of Oxford trained geologist Jeremy Leggett, author of The Empty Tank: Oil, Gas, Hot Air, and the Coming Financial Catastrophe, in a 2006 Macleans article as follows, emphasis added:
. . . when the truth can no longer be obscured, the price will spike, the economy nosedive, and the underpinnings of our civilization will start tumbling like dominos. "The price of houses will collapse. Stock markets will crash. Within a short period, human wealth -- little more than a pile of paper at the best of times, even with the confidence about the future high among traders -- will shrivel." There will be emergency summits, diplomatic initiatives, urgent exploration efforts, but the turmoil will not subside. Thousands of companies will go bankrupt, and millions will be unemployed. "Once affluent cities with street cafés will have queues at soup kitchens and armies of beggars. The crime rate will soar. The earth has always been a dangerous place, but now it will become a tinderbox."

By 2010, predicts Leggett, democracy will be on the run . . . economic hardship will bring out the worst in people. Fascists will rise, feeding on the anger of the newly poor and whipping up support. These new rulers will find the tools of repression -- emergency laws, prison camps, a relaxed attitude toward torture -- already in place, courtesy of the war on terror. And if that scenario isn't nightmarish enough, Leggett predicts that "Big Oversight Number One" -- climate change -- will be simultaneously making its presence felt "with a vengeance." On the heels of their rapid financial ruin, people "will now watch aghast as their food and water supplies dwindle in the face of a climate going awry." Prolonged droughts will spread, decimating harvests. Source
If you are focusing solely on the price at the pump, buying a hybrid car, or getting some of those energy efficient light bulbs, you aren’t seeing the bigger picture.

AIGA Design for Democracy

The American Institute of Graphic Arts has made their voices heard:

Design for Democracy defines national election design guidelines.

In July 2007 the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) accepted AIGA Design for Democracy’s research and best practice recommendations for ballot and polling place information design. Guidelines and editable samples were distributed to 6,000 election officials across the country this January. As a result, local jurisdictions now have the tools to apply communication design principles and make voting easier and more comprehensible for all citizens.

Design for Democracy continues work with states and local election jurisdictions to update regulations and to empower designers, election officials, vendors and printers to apply these guidelines. For instance, AIGA has placed an Election Design Fellow with the State of Oregon, has worked with the State of Florida to update its ballot design regulations and will counsel election officials from across the nation at conferences in April and July. AIGA encourages all states and election jurisdictions to hire local designers to adapt samples for their own 2008 election content.

Design for Democracy writes the book on ballot and election design
AIGA Design for Democracy advisor, former AIGA board member and AIGA Chicago president Marcia Lausen is the author and designer of Design for Democracy: Ballot and Election Design, published by the University of Chicago Press and AIGA. This book describes work done in Illinois and Oregon that was foundational to the EAC project, and it serves as a compelling advocacy tool for both election design reform and the communication design profession. In January 2008, AIGA sent a copy to each Member of Congress.

Established in 1998, AIGA Design for Democracy applies design tools and thinking to increase civic participation by making interactions between the U.S. government and its citizens more understandable, efficient and trustworthy. Newbaric's promise to you...

How do they do it? Well, as promised (about five minutes ago) Newbaric has gone around the world (cyber, of course) to find your answer. For those who care, this is what Wikipedia has to say about it:

Seedless watermelons
Although so-called "seedless" watermelons have far fewer seeds than the seeded varieties, they generally contain at least a few soft, pale seeds. They are the product of crossing a female tetraploid plant (itself the product of genetic manipulation, using colchicine) with diploid pollen. The resulting triploid plant is sterile, but will produce the seedless fruit if pollenized by a diploid plant. For this reason, commercially available seedless watermelon seeds actually contain two varieties of seeds; that of the triploid seedless plant itself (recognizable because the seed is larger), and the diploid plant which is needed to pollenize the triploid. Unless both plant types are grown in the same vicinity, no seedless fruit will result. This system for growing seedless watermelons was first developed by H. Kihara in Japan and subsequently improved by O J Eigsti in partnership with Kihara. This scientific relationship was begun at the Third International Genetics Congress, held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1948.
Their collaboration lasted for over 20 years until Kihara died in 1986. Eigsti (who was a professor at Goshen College in Goshen, IN) developed a tetraploid hybrid in the 1950s which became the gold standard for all seedless watermelons developed since then. In 1986, Eigsti's company was reorganized and a joint venture (American Sunmelon) was entered into with SunWorld International and in the ensuing eleven years seedless watermelon became a staple in supermarkets around the world. In 1998, Eigsti's tetraploid hybrid along with all of the assets of American Sunmelon were sold to Syngenta, the seed producing arm of Novartis A.G.

Congrats to all of you who eat organic to be healthy! That was the number one reason for buying organic, according to the OFFICIAL census done by yours truly, Newbaric. Some were not aware of what USDA organic is, and some still are not sure why they buy organic.

Hello and happy 2008 to all!

I am happy to say that Newbaric has had an exciting beginning to a new year. There will be a few new products coming your way, real soon.

Newbaric will have an apparel line that will include tees and boardshorts. This will be a very serious line, of course. We do not mess around when it comes to graphic design. Expect to see some serious graphic work on these tees and surf trunks.

ALSO, Newbaric will be launching a card/stationary company in collaboration with Dutchess paper. The line, "Fresh Cut Grass" will include all sorts of fun designs and themed cards to your liking. They will be assorted letterpress, screen printed and good 'ol off set. Stay tuned to the same Newbaric channel, at the same Newbaric time...

Whorganic

These posters were done by Newbaric for the BlueGreen design show in Venice, CA. They question the motives of the "organic" movement. I know this all seems a little anti-green, however it more pro-green than most of the organic food we buy. It is simply asking us as a nation to think for ourselves.

I have battled with this whole Organic and green movement that is going on right now. I will do what is in my power to help the environment, and I will not be an ignorant human by doing obvious things that contribute to the destruction of our planet.

However, at what point have we just bought into another marketing scheme brought to us my corporate America? At what point have we turned blind to the fact that politicians are just that, politicians. They do not have anyone's interest except of course for numero uno.

So when do we blow the horn on blaming everything on "global warming"? Maybe our planet has been in a constant state of change since before time? The Ice Age, the age of the Dinosaur. Do these ring a bell? Our planet has a mind of it's own, and we are simply along for the ride. Of course that does not mean start using as much aerosal and styrofoam you can find. Let's be smart about, but lets also get a mind of our own.

Think before you buy that "Organic" avocado from South America. The same avocado that used tons of fuel and man power to get to your kitchen. Organic is not organic anymore. If you really care, open up Safari and do some research for yourself. USDA organic is a faint image of what organic used to mean. Locally grown, sustainable, pesticide-free; these are things of the past. It is impossible to have everything be organic in the true sense, with the demand we have today.

The Sad Death Of 'Organic

I was a little unprepared. The commercial came on and I heard the familiar ukulele strums of the late Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's famous and famously beautiful version of "Over the Rainbow" (I know, but it really is quite lovely) and my first reaction was merely to cringe and wince as yet another exquisite and plaintive song was whored out to the advertising demons, just one of thousands.

But then came the barrage of images: the requisite shot of the Perfect Mom feeding her Perfect Child some sort of Perfect Food, all bathed in soft morning breakfasty light with happy trees peeking through the windows of the Perfect Kitchen in some utopian hunk of Perfect America, a bizarre scene that of course does not exist anywhere on this planet given how there weren't three empty wine bottles and some used underwear and a stack of dirty dishes and a fresh bottle of Xanax and an open newspaper offering up giant headlines about murders and nuclear warheads and Korean sex slaves anywhere in sight.
And then it happened. The logo. The product shot. The soothing voice-over. It was a commercial for a brand-new product: Kellogg's Organic Rice Krispies. And your heart goes, Ugh.

You say it aloud and the words tend to catch in your throat and make you sort of gag. Kellogg's Organic Rice Krispies, with "organic" in big scripted flowing font across the top of the box, all steeped in bogus warmth and happiness and false notions of health and nature and protecting your Perfect Child from the millions of icky poisons and unhealthy crap churned out by giant megacorps exactly like, well, exactly like Kellogg's.

Kellogg's Organic Rice Krispies. It's sort of like saying "Lockheed Martin Granola Bars" or "Exxon Bottled Spring Water." Self-immolating, and not in a good way.

That's when I heard it. The plaintive wail, the sigh, the crack and the moan and the whimper, like a tree shooting itself in the head. It was the final death knell of the "true" organic movement, breathing its last.

Because yes indeed, it's over. Organic is dead. Corporations have officially bought it out, the USDA has weakened its definition to near death, Whole Foods has made it chic and popular and profitable and yet has compromised its integrity like no other by being forced to pretty much ignore small, local farms and ideas of sustainability in favor of staggering commercial growth. And now this.

Did you know? Did you already understand the real definition? Because that's what "organic" was really supposed to mean, way back when: local, sustainable, ethical, connected to source, pesticide- and hormone-free. But the vast majority of organic product now flooding the market only gloms on to that last aspect (and sometimes, barely even that), to meet the USDA's impotent organic guidelines. Ah, government. There's just nothing like it to make you want to smack yourself in the skull with a brick.

One example: Stonyfield Farm's organic yogurt. As BusinessWeek points out, the stuff is made not on an idyllic working farm like the one on the label but rather in a giant industrial factory. They get their milk trucked in from a whole range of suppliers and it's possible they will soon begin to import some of their organic ingredients -- in dried, powdered form -- from New Zealand, so as to meet national demand, delivering it all over the country via pollutive trucking companies.

This is the harsh reality, the real cost of mainstream organic. There apparently aren't enough happy small, Earth-conscious local farms around to produce this stuff in sufficient quantities to feed the entire Wal-Mart nation. Massive compromises have been made. And those compromises mean "organic" is a shell of its former self.

"Organic," according to the lobbyist-friendly USDA, does not have to mean the food is grown using sustainable (read: nondestructive) farming practices. It does not mean locally produced. It does not mean the ethical treatment of animals. Nor does it mean the companies that produce it need be the slightest bit fair or trustworthy or socially responsible. All it means now: no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, no bioengineering.

So is that enough? After all, the fact that megaproducers like Kellogg's and General Mills and frightening discount megaretailers like Wal-Mart are going big into organic certainly will translate into an enormous reduction in chemicals in the American diet, thousands if not (eventually) millions of pounds of pesticides and hormones and fertilizer removed from the food chain as a whole. The benefits of this cannot be understated: It's a great thing indeed.

But there's a massive snag: Thousands of products now claim to be organic, but many merely replace the chemicals and pesticides with a slew of other industrial, pollutive, destructive processes that easily offset any health benefits -- most notably the extra shipping and global delivery these "industrial organic" producers employ to obtain and deliver organic ingredients, which pumps so many chemicals back into the environment it probably counteracts all those saved in growing the stuff in the first place.

(On that note, if you're going to read one astounding book on the subject of farming, organics, fast food, and the American diet overall, let it be Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma." He maps it all out far better than I ever could. It's your must-read of the summer, even though it's now fall.)

Whole Foods? Perhaps the greatest mixed blessing of all, an amazing company that has single-handedly done more to bring the organic movement to the mainstream and raise awareness of healthy foods and improve farming and meat-quality standards across the board, not to mention the pleasures of food shopping overall. Yet at the same time, merely by its sheer size and success, they've simultaneously done more to dilute the real meaning of "organic" than any other company.
Put another way: Unless you shop at farmers' markets or quasi-hippie co-ops or unless you do your homework and find a true family-run farm within 100 miles of your home and establish a relationship with them and really begin to buy local, the odds that the next "organic" product you buy truly meets the original definition is about as likely as finding real breasts at the Playboy mansion. And for now, maybe this is just the way it has to be.

Which brings us back to Kellogg's Organic Rice Krispies. Industrial to the hilt, not the slightest bit locally grown, not the slightest bit sustainable, from the same company that poisons your kid with Pop-Tarts and Froot Loops and Scooby-Doo Berry Bones and cares about as much for the health of the planet as Dick Cheney cares about pheasants. And of course, they ship the crap all over the country in planes and trucks that burn enough oil to make Bush leer and the oil CEOs grin and it's all just one big happy joke. On you.

But hey, at least they're helping remove millions of pounds of chemical crap from the food chain, right? At least they pretend to care. Problem is, they've merely replaced those chemicals with an even more toxic additive: hypocrisy. Now, can you swallow it?
